Earlier today, I suggested that teachers might create commercials for their classes. Neil Hokanson posted a comment pointing to his class commercial from several years ago. The question is should have continued on with was, “How might a classroom commercial help you do your job?”
What about asking students to make the commercial at the end of the school year?

I have done this for my classroom the past few years. My goal was to get some pictures of students on the first day of school and prep the video to be shown the next day as I introduce the course. I only happened to find one of these “commercials†from the 2002-2003 school year (I never thought to hang on to all of them!), and I have uploaded it to YouTube. This activity can also be extended by having students create commercials for projects, places, books, etc. The possibilities are endless and fun!
What a great idea! I am a Technology Integration Specialist…I teach the teachers how to utilize technology throughout the curriculum. I am going to create a commercial for my upcoming workshop on blogging and podcasting! Thanks for sharing!
I love this idea! What a unique way to not only incorporate the use of technology in the classroom, yet to also represent to students the information they will be covering throughout that semester. I remember in high school I once did a project, where after gathering all my researched material, my partner and I developed a short video to show the class. The attention we received was amazing. Our video was a creative way to get the information we wanted across, and the people in our class actually remembered it. Through the creation of the video I also learned a lot about technology. Things that if I did not develop the video I am sure I would have never ran across. The information I learned then has today helped me with making numerous projects of mine professional. I believe this commercial idea would be very interesting to develop within the educational system. I especially like the idea of students developing their very own. The possibilities of how to do the commercial and where to go with it are endless. I’m going to look more into this idea, and how it can become possible for my future students.
I love this idea. I think that it would be a wonderful way to help teachers conceptualize and promote their classes. It would be great if students could view the commercials before signing up for classes….how much more powerful than reading the catalog copy of a course description. Teachers would also be encouraged to learn more about technology and be models for their students. It seems like a win-win to me. I also like the idea of students making commercials about a course at the end of a course. Teachers could select which ones to use for the following year. This would give students a way to sum up the main objectives of the course.
