About Building Digital Communication Skills…

eSchool News has announced a resource page for “Building Digital Communication Skills for the 21st-Century Workforce.”

Educators, economists, and forecasters all agree on the growing importance of so-called “21st-century skills” in the workplace. While reading, writing, and arithmetic will always form the foundation of any solid education, digital communication and media literacy are on the verge of being elevated to the same level of importance. In addition to requiring advanced skills in reading and math, the employers of tomorrow are going to require a high degree of digital and multimedia fluency.

As little as we know about the future for which we are preparing our students, it is clear that it will be a place that is governed by information. Accessing, processing, building with, and communicating that information will be a major part of our daily personal and professional tasks.

Being literate in this future will certainly involve the ability to read, write, and do basic arithmetic. However, the concept of literacy in the 21st century will be far richer and more comprehensive than the 3 Rs of the one room school house.

Well, it’s not just about workforce, but I found the first paragraph of their page a bit of an echo for the description of a keynote address that I’ve been presenting for over five years. Better late than never, and certainly better now than later.

There is some good reading here that I’ve started, and will come back to later this week. I was especially happy to hear about Voc-Ed monies being funneled back into education, despite efforts by the Bush administration to send the money elsewhere. There are also some words from David Thornburg..

The main thing that’s holding technology back is … a fear–a well-placed fear,I might add–that if technology becomes ubiquitous, it will totally transform the practice of education. There are a lot of people who don’t want the practice of education transformed, because they’re very comfortable with it.

It appears to be a collection of writings and reports about efforts to bend schools toward 21st century teaching and learning. This is a very good conversation for us to be witnessing.

  1. As a teacher who has spent the better part of the past two months trying to engage my kids in podcasting and blogging (check us out at http://snipurl.com/130m9), I definitely understand the importance of teaching digital literacy and media fluency to my students.

My greatest struggles, however, are in trying to justify my work to colleagues who are still very traditional in their thinking and committed to delivering the content in our curriculum and preparing students for standardized tests. While I know that I can meet those goals using the technology of the Read/Write Web, there are doubts among peers who are unaware of or uncomfortable with technology.

Has anyone else had success convincing administrators and colleagues that digital literacy and fluency are at least as essential as other curriculuar objectives—especially when digital literacy doesn’t appear in any of our “standard courses of study?”

  2. Seems like Snip wasn’t working today! Here’s our podcast link:

Anyone have feedback on how we can make our work better, or how I can teach digital literacy and media fluency more effectively?

As David says, “better late than never,” right? I just learned about podcasting and blogging—-after reading Will’s book.

  3. I have had 22 years of working with technology “integration” and staff development. To me, the question usually begins with WHAT we teach (… i.e. ABOUT blogs, wikis, podcasting) and ends with HOW we teach (…i.e. WITH blogs, wikis, podcasting). I lived through the “teach everyone BASIC” years, to the “teach them LOGO” years, to the “teach them Word and PowerPoint years” etc.

Like phonics, there are basics to teach, but the end result is not knowing about phonics!

Transforming our classrooms is not the same as defining and teaching “…digital communication and media literacy…” (or is it “…digital and multimedia fluency.”!!), though that is a part of our charge as educators. It isn’t even a case of teaching “technology”. Usually we talk about “integrating”, which is where the transforming is relevant.

To me, “integrating” happens when we don’t talk ABOUT but act and model WITH.
Thus, we will receive respect of savvy students when we maintain and post to blogs, wikis, or podcasting sites as part of our everyday activities with them, without undue focus on the tools themselves.

The tools are MEANS to be used in most of our classrooms, the ENDS in only some for a short period.

The bigger issue of our discussions of literacy and fluency is how to model the use of tools that are in an unprotected environment when we are charged (in K-12 at least) with PROTECTING children while parents are otherwise engaged. This responsibility to parents is often overlooked in our discussions, while folks like Will Richardson (whom I really respect) think the responsibility is to focus on the tools themselves and educate kids about the dangers of their uses etc. while making the open environment accessible to them.

This focus would transform the classroom.. which IS a walled environment by design.. by eliminating the walls. As an educator, I have written about doing that with telecommunicatiosn technlogies for many years. I always struggled to reconcile this to a “classroom” so I could both engage students in authentic activities while, at the same time, protecting them until they are mature enough and educated enough to go “out there”. Parents expected this of me, as I did of my own children’s teachers. The fact that kdis are already “out there” is a societal issue to be dealt with everywhere, not just in my classroom!

Dave, you created Blogmeister to provide a web-placed PROTECTED environment. Alan November did this with his Learning Communities. Blackboard, WebCt, Angel, SchoolCenter, eChalk, and other vendors have done this well too. Liz Kaplan in her School Administrator article* in August said that she believed the use of these kinds of protected tools to SUPPORT existing classrooms is the next “killer ap” about to rear its head. This is from the head of the Virtual High School in Boston!

Until we can offer the toolset Will calls “Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts and Other Powerful Web Tools for the Classroom” in an online CLASSROOM environment (meaning to me: protected), we will have difficulty defining communicatons “literacy” and connecting our homes to our classrooms. There is a reason that very few of our experienced teachers have exchanged electronic information with kids. They have not been given the tools in an environment with “walls”.. the classroom they understand and manage, which protect them too.

  4. Hello David and Happy Thanksgiving! I agree that this new forum by eSchoolNews is welcome and long overdue. It will be interesting to see how they cover the issue as I noticed they didn’t really report on any of the competitiveness reports that have come out over the last year despite a heavy emphasis on education in each publication. It is a shame they made it a collection or articles rather than a blog to faciliate discussion.

Thornburg is also right – access by itself will not necessarily transform individual behavior or entire organizations. However, part of the reason many “believe” this today is because of the ed tech community’s message back in the 90s was that access will lead to transformation. David himself contributed to this through columns like this: http://teacherline.pbs.org/teacherline/resources/thornburg/thornburg0999.cfm Out of this message came programs like the Erate that focused entirely on access without addressing any of the behavior changes we expected from students, teachers, and administrators.

One point of clarification. The Bush budget didn’t propose to send the money “elsewhere.” They proposed to combine the existing voc-ed dollars with new money on a “high school reform” intiative. Details are here: http://www.ed.gov/about/overview/budget/budget07/summary/edlite-section2c.html#voc Their arguement was that this would actually provide more flexibility for schools to use the funds for anything they wished – Tech Prep, technology, AP/IB, etc and other programs. Right now the program dollars focused on tech prep can only be used for that purpose – not technology, AP programs, etc.

  5. i’d like you to send me a copy of any book which talks about building digital communication skills and its integration in the teaching fields.

  6. i’d like you to send me a copy of any book which talks about building digital communication skills and its integration in the teaching fields, or newsweeks? I’ll be grateful if you would kindly like to help me?
