XOs in Peru

An Interesting story in eSchoolNews about laptops in rural Peru…

Top News – Laptop project enlivens Peruvian hamlet:

Since its announcement nearly three years ago, former MIT Media Lab director Nicholas Negroponte’s One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative has generated plenty of controversy. But if the experience of children in Arahuay, Peru, is any indication, skepticism of the program could be short-lived.

  1. I’ve been not too far from that little town. I’m thinking of Skype-out calling the director of the school for an interview. Not sure if I can make that work, but I’d love to hear his thoughts.

  2. David,

I know many people are concerned about online ethics. Where do you stand on passing along an eSchool News story “borrowed” title and all from an article published by The Washington Post and correctly attributed to a named AP correspondent?

  3. Wow! I just took another look at the eSchoolNews page and found no attribution to another source at all. The page came up a bit jumbled on my browser, so I even searched the source code for references to .com’s other than exchoolnews.com, and there was nothing.

Then I searched for the title of the eSchoolNews article (in quotes) on Google and got 126,000 hits. Topping the list were Yahoo! News, Physorg, ABCNews, The Examiner, and SFGate. The ones I randomly checked all attributed that AP source.

This looks pretty unethical to me, Gary! I checked a few other eSchoolNews articles and they all carry a vague “From eSchool News staff and wire service reports” byline.

  4. David,

You are right, the “XO in Peru” article is great. The best part is the video that in linked to it. Only problem is that it is in Spanish.

I ran the accompanying transcript through the Google translator so that you can get the general idea of what is being said.

You can see it at my blog, Dr. Z Reflects, http://tinyurl.com/2o2pc2

I really enjoy your blog and am following you on Twitter.
