The Stolen Flame

I really do have to get a life.  Now that I’ve gotten a little more dexterous in this virtual environment, I’m finding it almost addictive.  I think it’s like athletics.  As you get better at something, you want to keep working on it.

LS MemorialAnyway, as I was flying around, looking for the paramecium, I ran across this, a virtual memorial to the victims of the Virginia Tech Massacre.  It was quiet.  Three other avatars were there.  Lots of flowers and pictures of many of the victims on the wall.

There was also a pedistal, with nothing on it, entitled, “The Stolen Flame!”

If I were better at this, I would have thought to copy the SLURL and pasted it here.  Alas, I just don’t think of that sort of thing yet.  If anyone else finds the location, please comment it to this post.

I think that SLURL should work (my SLURLs don’t always seem to work, not sure what I am doing wrong). The Virginia Tech memorial display is at the Welcome area of Info Island I (part of the “Info Island Archipelago” which includes EduIsland), so if the above doesn’t work, you should be able to search for InfoIsland and tp there.

  2. I find it intriguing what a wonderful tool technology provides for individuals to process and grieve. I have seen it with friends going through cancer (blogs) and have read much about it following VT’s tragedy. NPR was using vicitms’ MySpace pages to write profiles, and it struck me how suddenly a person’s MySpace page had been converted from a social spot to a living memorial.

In Rapid City, we had our own gun scare this week, and I have found a group blog to be the perfect tool for telling our stories. We would have told them in class even without the blog, but the blog allows these students to share their experiences directly with the community that felt so close to the events. It’s a nice way to circumvent the few stories seen through media and express poignantly what it was like to be inside the building and go through that stress.

  3. I am glad you found my work Stolen Flame to be a fitting tribute. I do not consider myself to be an artisit, but the magnitude of this tragedy moved me to make something beautiful come out of the pain and destruction. You can find it here : http://slurl.com/secondlife/Info%20Island/96/113/33 . While you are there, please purchase a Hokie t-shirt. All monies from the shirts go to the victims’ memorial fund. Please fell frre to look for me inworld.
