I just took a break from working on this online course and did a quick visit to Technorati. I glanced at the most searched terms and discovered, at the top of the list, the term StudiVZ. I remembered noticing it a couple of days ago during a presentation, but it wasn’t at the top of the list them. So I clicked it, only to be surprised that all of the blog entries were in German (or Dutch).
First of all, there is no value judgement going on here, but I was surprised to find that the most searched-for blogs right now are in a language other than English. This is a good thing, because to points to the growing global nature of the web — probably owing to the new web applications.
Secondly, what is StudiVZ? Is this an instructional application, or something else? Anything new going on here?

I was going to comment on how quick Karl and Carl found the info for it. However, I’m more amazed at how recent this Wikipedia article is, referencing Rumsfeld’s resignation (two days ago).
Doesn’t sound like the company has had great business practices in the past. Of course, that might happen when you model your communications after Nazi-supported newspapers. I wonder if this is really true…

I read most of Karl’s link – karstnet-wenzlaff.de – and it seems as if the company has taken quite a hit from bloggers regarding PR, privacy, and just bad business matters. Interesting read Karl, thanks.

It’s just that German bloggers found out about what kind of wrong things are going on in this company.

looks like a simple verison of facebook for german students. Web 2.0 is everywhere!
Yes, but the story also highlights some of the issues that most web 2.0 companies will have to deal with sooner or later: That if you’re working with social media you have to play by the rules of social media and accept that they have their own dynamics.
It’s all very well to portray yourself as just a bunch of happy folks who are in it for the party. But once you’re handling sensitive user data, people are going to ask questions, about your revenue streams, your background, etc. And you better be straightforward about this, because if people have to find out the hard way, they tend to put it against you, and then you’re in trouble. Ask Edelman/Wal-Mart, they just had to find out the hard way.
The StudiVZ story is really a textbook case of all the things you should avoid when you’re establishing a social network. There are so many blunders here (too many to mention in this comment), *despite* the fact that some investors come from backgrounds where they should know better (a media group, a ringtone vendor), that you could organize a whole workshop off this case.

StudiVZ is a community as Facebook or MySpace. You register and have your own blogpage. It is a great tool to stay in tough with our old calssmades. Or collaborate with other students that vistit the same university and or subject.
I believe you need a student ID to register. It is a great tool!

It seems to me like a mixture of “how to stay in contact”, “how to meet friends/learning partners in the new university” a lot of study planning tools and so on.
What in fact sounds firstly like a great tool – and shure it could have the potential – is itself divulging like a bushfire.
So here at my very little university everybody is asking are you a member of …. .
But there can also asked for, if they use all the potential learning supporting strategies behind. A little reuest we made showed the following: Frequently used are the features for meeting all the poeple. It seems to be unknown that there are features to meet to learn, to collaborate etc.
Maybe it is reasoned by the smallness of our university, where everybody knows everybody and there is no need for this, but in fact request to other peoples cought in the materia seem to validate my suspecious fact. This may be a reason why it is a little bit controversy diskussed.
Thinking the other way around tells me that this maybe a good start to get all the peoples here in the contact with the web two.zero. although most of the colleques i know even don’t know what to answer, if they were asked about the new web. And so the StudiVZ can also be used like they did in 1.0 ways. So like many of all the applications before.

Social software is growing all around the globe. Facebook.com, for instance, seems to be one of the best examples of how to establish a functional web 2.0 social networking tool and at the same time maintain the privacy rights of its users … at least as far as I know.
StudiVZ, a European equivalent is, as already pointed out, another good example of how the very important issue of privacy can be endangered. Concerning the “uproar” all around the StudiVZ-affair (and believe me: Concerning the german blogosphere it WAS an uproar that made into the daily press very very quickly) one has to think about the motivations of the initiators of that platform. What did the want? Officially they wanted to connect the European university with each other but one can assume that it was probably all a matter user data which of course can be used for economical matters. And this means money. The exact background of all that has happened recently are not quite clear yet.
A striking fact, however, is that all the missteps of the platform owners did not lead to a declining user number. Either most of the users do not assess the personal information (which they entered themselves) as all too important or … yeah … or what? Is the connection tool or better the advantage or gains of StudiVZ more valuable than the abuse of personal information?
