Teaching & Learning on the Edge of Change

We have covered a LOT of material during the past two day, here in Collingwood, Ontario. What have we discussed — what have you learned — that you especiallly feel will be of benefit to you staff, when I return the end of next month?

  1. Thanks for the session. There was a lot of material. I think it would be great to give an overview and then expand the amount of time teachers have to set up class web pages or blogs they could take home and use.

  2. The “Did you knows…” were excellent. Information re. gender gap. RRS was a wonderful thing – very cool and applicable. The Podcast information was very useful. The raw data manipulation of earthquake info was interesting in how it brought math alive.

  3. Teachers need to understand how students think, the new ways of communicating that we need to be using in the classroom. Statistics related to changes in technology and its influence on future careers. Specific examples of how it can be used in the classroom. Voices of students.

  4. Please be sure that ALL applications on this day have a direct classroom application.

    Intuet
    Blogging

    The Did You Know questions….

Please show the student Video Essay on the sweatshops and globalization.

The four E’s replacing the three R’s

End result of a pod cast…..a classroom application

  5. Reinforce to the audience the current status of kids and technology. Include the “Did you Know…..” section. Provide examples of present technology that exists in the lives of our students. Anaology…..this is a thunderstorm that is looming on the horizon that when the thunderclouds crash together ( the juxtaposing of the state of kids’ literacy/technology and our knowledge of/use of technology) which juxtaposes the state of our technology) it creates a storm of energy that will move us forward on this front.

  6. I think that the overall message is that it isn’t about us, it’s about the students. What do they need and, subsequently, what do we need to do, to learn, to provide what they need?

Presenting to our teachers – use the examples that we found exciting:
    – podcasts, webcasts – these have real life applications in classrooms and schools – linking up to class and school websites, electronic newsletters – research tools
    – the “did you knows” were great, but focus on those that highlight what we don’t know what our kids will need to know or do 5, 10 years from now
    – don’t be afraid – this is the toughest thing – the message that the kids will likely know more than us and that’s okay is one that they need to hear

  7. Some thoughts from Table 14:

Cut out references to need for money
    SweatShop video – share video
Gravity Concept – change in how learning has changed between 60s and today
The idea of the class as a learning engine
Grade 3/4 Podcast – very powerful
    RSS

    Thanks

  8. Focussing on the difference between how we see technology and how students see technology. It is a source of information for them and it will be an easy for them to see that fact and thereby invite technolgy into their classes.

The many sites and resources you have shared will be be of great value to several of our front runners. The overwhelming number of resources may overwhelm some but it is sure to entice the majority of teachers into revisiting the topic at a latter date. Good luck
