It’s a New Day

It is truly difficult to describe my feelings today

I’m having breakfast alone, in the Swan Room, at the Westin Hotel, near the Atlanta Airport.  Today is the first general day of the Georgia Educational Technology Conference (GaETC).  I’ll ride a shuttle over to the convention center in a bit and watch Ron Clark’s keynote address.  After that, I will join the other featured speakers (Patrick Crispen, Steve Dembo, Chris Moersch, Bernajean Porter, Tony Vincent, Brent Williams, and Tammy Worcester) and other distinguished educators, as we set about presenting more than 250 sessions.

With all of this going on, it will be difficult to remember the significance of this day.  Not only did we elect a new president of the United States yesterday, but we elected a man, who, when and where I grew up, would not have been allowed to drink from the same water fountain as I.

We have a long way to go, a lot of catching up to do.  But yesterday, we turned around to face our future.  We have chosen to walk and climb forward — and for the first time, in a long time…

I am proud of my country!

  1. David…

I am very tired this morning. Tracey and I simply sat and watched history until the wee hours of this morning. Even though it was apparent early that the game was won, we simply couldn’t pull ourselves away.

From the perspective of an outsider, I feel such a freshness today. I believe (hope?) that this will mark a turning point, where the wonderful American people will start fresh with the global community. Collectively, you have much to offer. By interrupting history with such a radical choice, I believe the United States will be seen by the global community through a very different set of filters.

It is exciting. It almost feels like we are welcoming back to the global family our long-lost extended relatives who have been freed from chains imposed for half a century.

To steal a phrase from “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”…”welcome home, American family. Welcome home.”

  2. We were so excited and inspired by the results of yesterday’s election.

But what brought tears was a text message from one of our international students: Hello from Thailand. American’s dream has come true with the new president. Change will come to USA and world 🙂 love Non

We are such a part of a global community thanks to the tools that are within our grasp each day. Each individual can have a voice that can be heard across the world. Imagine! Dream! Learn!!!

  3. David,

I was actually editing lesson plans related to the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation as I watched the election results come in. It was quite exciting to be reading/writing about slavery as I watched the first African American be elected to the presidency. I hope our nation only continues to move forward.

  4. I too felt (and still feel) hope and vigor for our future! I too am proud for the first time in, what feels like my adult life, of my country. We did the right thing. There are still many naysayers out there trying to burst the bubble … but it’s too big and too wonderful to pop!

  5. Did anyone else use their mobile phone to track election results as they came in? Ever since I started working with Motorola, I have become a huge fan of the Krave (motorola.com/krave). With full HTML web browsing, touch screen keypad, speakerphone and bluetooth, it is definitely my pick for a future device. We have a lot to look forward to with our new elected leader, and a great deal to look forward to with current technological advances! Any thoughts?
